Age of Empires II: HD Edition is a strategy video game that tells the story of European colonization. It was developed by Ensemble Studios and published by Microsoft Game Studios. Released on October 18th, 2009 for PC, it is the sequel to Age of Empires: The Age of Kings and was built on Ensemble's Crystal engine. The game has sold over 11 million copies worldwide. In the autumn of 2010, a port was released for the iPad. It was later released for Android devices in 2012, Windows Phone in 2013 and iOS again in 2014. In December 2009 Microsoft announced that Age of Empires II HD Edition had been banned from sale or public access within China, due to the opening up of Chinese gaming markets.[clarification needed] Gameplay The gameplay is similar to its predecessor, but has a few new features. Players can customize their troops with weapons and armor. The tactics menu allows players to set formations that can be used by all their units. New buildings have been added that give bonuses to nearby friendly troops and allow you to construct defensive structures such as walls and towers. Age of Empires II HD Edition includes both the original Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings and the expansion pack, The Conquerors. It features HD graphics and entirely new art assets and music, as well as a new campaign and scenarios. Online multiplayer has been reintroduced, allowing players to compete against other people over the internet or through a local network.[7] Players can also join multiplayer games hosted by others. Tilesets have been reworked to higher resolution versions, such as Siamese (which was not available in The Conquerors), New World, American (which was not available in The Age of Kings), and Babylonian; the latter two were only released with the HD edition. The HD Edition also features two new campaigns: one that follows the Roman Empire under the leadership of Mark Anthony, and a second campaign that tells a "what if" story about Alexander the Great leading a Greek army against Rome during the Punic Wars. In Age of Empires II HD Edition, players have access to four different civilizations to play from: Spain, England, France, and The Aztecs. The three different campaigns follow three famous leaders known for their accomplishments in real life: Hernán Cortés of Spain (The Conquerors), Julius Caesar of Rome (Rome), and Alexander the Great of Greece (Greece). Each campaign begins with an introduction movie that summarizes its respective leader's exploits. Players can play multiplayer games with up to eight players per game, with various map variations to choose from including numerous scenarios designed by the community. It also includes the original five official scenarios, which are used for "scenario creation", as well as three new "official" scenarios designed by the community. The game now supports up to 32 players in each game. Multiplayer games can be played with both friends and random online players. The game was released on Steam on October 18, 2009.[8] As of October 2018, it is one of only two products available on Steam with 3 million or more active users at the same time.
